There's nothing new about an occasional volcanic eruption. But a huge spike in activity should not be overlooked as if it happens all the time. Right now every continent has multiple active volcanoes. In North America, the Shishaldin Volcano in Alaska and Mt. St. Helens in Washington are waking up while Popocatepetl in Mexico and Fuego in El Salvador are erupting. In Europe, Italy's Mt. Etna and Iceland's Reykjanes are getting all the attention. In Africa, Congo, Tanzania, and Ethiopia have active volcanoes. A new island has been created by an eruption off Iwo Jima, Japan - while countless other eruptions occur from Russia's Kamchatka region down to Indonesia and east towards New Guinea and Tonga. In South America, the Pacific coast has multiple volcanic eruptions from Ecuador and Peru south to Chile. Even Antarctica has Mt. Erebus going off.
