I have known for many years that former PLO leader Yasser Arafat was born in Cairo and served in the Egyptian army before deciding it would be politically useful to claim a birth in Jerusalem and attempt to portray himself as “Palestinian” – but I didn’t know the extent of his Soviet sponsorship and KGB training – nor did I have any idea that Mahmoud Abbas had similar KGB training – or that the PLO charter was written up by the KGB in Moscow. But Soviet defectors and double agents have brought out detailed information on the PLO, its creation, and its leaders.
