I found this long and insightful article by Jack Shafer and Tucker Doherty at Politico.com It's so long, I'm going to offer a quick summary before the excerpts from the article. Long story short: the media was wrong about Trump beating Hillary in 2016 because the people who work in the media - TV, newspaper, and internet - are increasing concentrated in just a few cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. Even if the people in the industry weren't overwhelmingly liberal Democrats, their views are affected by the liberal mindset of the cities they work in. You can't work on a military base and not absorb some of the culture and thinking there. Likewise, you can't work in New York and not be affected by the extremely liberal cultural bias. Add to that the fact that only 7% of those in the industry identify as Republican, and assume that the remaining 93%, overwhelmingly liberal in thinking already, are surrounded by other liberals to reinforce their views as the only acceptable viewpoint. Lastly, newspaper jobs that had once been spread out across cities of all sizes to gather local news stories have been decimated in recent years, with most of the newspapers themselves going out of business. The truth is, big city liberals utterly dominate the media, and are concentrated in a bubble like liberal fantasy world that makes it hard for them to consider outside views from America's increasingly unhappy other half.
